While forgiveness is fundamental in the development of a covenantal relationship with God, many individuals have struggled with the process of forgiveness, and in understanding whether they have truly extended forgiveness in the case of being wronged. What happens when a person who has been violated makes a decision to forgive, letting go of the need to see justice served, but deep within there is lingering pain? Such lingering pain have sometimes caused a person to wonder whether they have extended forgiveness. In this discussion it is assumed that forgiveness is a dynamic process rather than a singular static event, and that the process is incumbent on a person’s covenantal relationship with God and sense of self.
